Safe sleep, sanitation, medications & more

Safe Sleep Rules

Missouri has strict safe sleep requirements for infant care programs. These rules are designed to reduce the risk of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome): • Each infant must have their own individual crib • Mattress must be firm and flat, fitting snugly in the crib • No soft bedding, blankets, pillows, bumper pads, or stuffed animals in the crib • Infants must be placed on their back to sleep • Each infant must have a separate sleep space (no sharing cribs) • Swaddling is generally not allowed in licensed programs unless with specific medical documentation These come from Missouri's child care regulations and align with safe sleep best practices.

Sanitation & Hygiene

• Diaper changing procedures must be posted at the changing area and followed consistently (the procedure includes specific steps for hand washing and surface sanitizing) • Hand-washing sinks must be accessible to children and staff • Surfaces that children touch must be cleaned and sanitized regularly • Cleaning products and chemicals must be stored out of children's reach, preferably in locked cabinets • Toys must be cleaned and sanitized regularly, especially items that go in mouths

Medication Storage & Authorization

If you administer any medication to a child (including over-the-counter medications like sunscreen or diaper cream): • You must have written authorization signed by the parent/guardian • Medications must be stored in a locked container or cabinet, out of children's reach • Medications must be in original containers with the child's name • You must log each time medication is given (time, dose, who administered it)

Outdoor Safety

• Outdoor play areas must be fenced (fence height requirements vary — check your specific regulations) • Playground equipment must be age-appropriate and in safe condition • The outdoor area must be free of hazards (standing water, toxic plants, sharp objects) • Children must be supervised at all times during outdoor play

First Aid

• A stocked first aid kit must be on-site and accessible to staff • At least one staff member with current first aid and CPR certification must be present at all times • The first aid kit should include bandages, antiseptic, gloves, and other basic supplies as required by regulations
